Building on the success of last year's inaugural exhibition, this year's show felt like a real step forward. A more focused selection of work, displayed in the spacious surroundings of the Main Hall, gave every piece room to breathe and every student the opportunity to shine. New heavyweight display boards transformed the hall into a gallery, with each Year 11 artist given their own exhibition space. Visitors were encouraged to wander, pause and spend time looking closely at the work, discovering the remarkable range of ideas, materials and techniques our students have explored over the past year.
Alongside GCSE and A-Level portfolios sat ambitious sculptural outcomes, beautifully presented sketchbooks and a selection of extra-curricular work, while winning entries from recent competitions were displayed on professionally installed 'washing lines'. Every visitor also received a commemorative exhibition catalogue, thoughtfully designed to celebrate the evening and featuring colourful reproductions of the artwork alongside bespoke texts written by students and teachers. Together they offered a glimpse not only of the finished pieces but also of the curiosity, perseverance and creative thinking that brought them into being.
The evening had a wonderful, warm atmosphere—quite literally, as one of the hottest evenings of the year coincided with the arrival of the staff football team fresh from their weekly match. Families, students and colleagues chatted over cheese and wine, kindly prepared and served by Mr Brooks, discussing their favourite pieces, and sharing the stories behind the work. Mme Yeung had also devised a light-hearted portrait sketch challenge, inviting visitors to match artists to a series of quick drawing. It proved to be a fun talking point throughout the evening and is something we hope to build on next year.
Perhaps the greatest success of the exhibition was seeing the pride on students' faces as they shared their work with friends and family. Attendance from staff, parents and students was significantly higher than last year, creating a lively, generous atmosphere that reflected the growing place of Art within the school community. Many visitors commented on the quality of the presentation, the thoughtful organisation and, most importantly, the standard of the work itself, making it a memorable evening for everyone involved.
The Art Department would like to thank everyone who helped make the exhibition possible, including the premises team, reception staff, catering team, teaching staff, tutors, Heads of Year and, above all, our students and their families. Their enthusiasm, encouragement and willingness to celebrate creativity together made the evening everything we had hoped it would be.
We are already looking forward to seeing where next year's exhibition will take us.
