Outstanding year 12 visitor inspires pupils to Aim High

On Friday, Pioneer pupils embarked on their first Pillar Day, focussing on exploring our four core values. We were delighted to welcome a very special guest speaker, pupil Shukri Lloyd, who is currently in year 12 at Ark Academy in Wembley. Shukri is currently studying four A Levels, mathematics, further mathematics, politics and English Literature. This follows on from her GCSE results last August, when she achieved a staggering 6 grade 9s, 3 grade 8s and one grade 7. Shukri spoke to pupils about how she prepared for this GCSE success, which started back in year 7. She encouraged pupils to think about their futures, starting now: “Without a vision” Shukri said, “you won't have something to work for”. Shukri was crystal clear about why she is so ambitious, and why Ark Pioneer pupils should adopt the same approach: “Aiming high gives you freedom in your life. You are free to choose your A Levels, your university and your career” adding that “Aiming high for Oxbridge and Russell Group universities means aiming high now in year 7.”

Pupils also explored how they might model determination in order to make these ambitions a reality, starting with their preparation for termly assessments in December. Shukri had some useful advice here too: “It is important to use effective revision techniques. Highlighting and re-reading are not a good way to revise. It is important to self-quiz and do practice papers.” Our pupils went on to learn more about the best ways to revise, including discussing the cognitive science underpinning memorisation.

Shukri left them in no doubt that with determination, they could make a difference in a short space of time “Revision is difficult to start but it is important to keep going. As the experts say, it only takes 21 days to form a habit.”

We are very grateful Shukri was able to visit and run these workshops with our pupils. We wish her all the best for her remaining studies in year 12.
